  1. I have been really meditating on the story from the Old Testament about the impoverished widow, and how the prophet had her fill all the vessels she could borrow with oil from the one vessel she had. That oil covered all the debt she had and provided enough provision for her to live on for the rest of her life.

I was struck by the parallel between that oil being poured out, and the blood of Christ poured out. The blood of Christ fills everything I can ever obtain, and it is sufficient to cover all my past debt (sin) and also to provide for me the rest of my life. God did not merely get her debt free but with nothing in the bank. If that had been the case, she likely would have slid back into debt, unless she had some unusual way to make enough money to make a humble living without borrowing. He provided enough to get her out of debt AND KEEP HER OUT OF DEBT. If she was foolish, I suppose she could get back into debt. But the account makes it clear she had enough to live on for the rest of her life.

So it is with the blood of Christ. I am not only cleansed, my past debt to God is not only paid, but the blood of Christ provides enough for me to STAY CLEAN! The New Testament is very clear about this, but the parable hidden in this Old Testament account powerfully illustrates this.

I also see a parallel between the contents of one vessel being able to fill all available vessels, and the blood of Christ, one human body, being enough to cover all the sins of all humans who have ever existed, and keep them pure forever.

  2. Very good thoughts. This story, as many in the Old Testament, can be used to learn many truths that apply today!

    Thanks,
